The last roll call is part of a memorial ceremony when a soldier is killed. The company first sergeant will call off the names of everybody in the unit and they will respond with “Here first sergeant”. The dead soldiers names are called last: first with their rank and last name; then with their rank, first and last name; and finally it is called out one last time with rank, first, middle, and last name. After the third time the 7-member firing squad fires three volleys and taps is played. UNC Greensboro carries on this tradition by reading the names and ages of the service members fallen during a given conflict followed by a short ceremony and the playing of taps. This year we will be honoring those fallen during the Vietnam War from North Carolina.
