SMART Scholarship-for-Service

What is it?

The Science, Mathematics And Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholarship for Service Program was established by the Department of Defense (DoD) to support undergraduate, master’s and doctoral students pursuing degrees in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines.

  • Pays for full tuition & all mandatory fees (no cap)
  • Annual stipends range from $25,000 to $41,000 depending on prior educational experience
  • Lasts up to 5 years
  • Pays for summer internships at DoD laboratories
  • Pays up to $1,200 per year in medical insurance
  • Pays $1,000 book allowance
  • Includes mentoring and employment placement upon graduation
  • Approximately 600 new awards made annually
  • U.S. citizens only; must be eligible to receive and hold a security clearance
